Abstract

In September 2024, the number of poor people (people with per capita expenditure per month below the Poverty Line) in West Sumatra reached 315.43 thousand people (5.42 percent), a decrease of 30.30 thousand people compared to the condition in March 2024 which amounted to 345.73 thousand people. The percentage of poor people in urban areas in March 2024 amounted to 4.72 percent and decreased to 4.16 percent in September 2024. Meanwhile, the percentage of poor people in rural areas in March 2024 amounted to 7.28 percent and fell to 6.79 percent in September 2024.

During the March 2024-September 2024 period, the number of poor people in urban areas fell by 13.43 thousand people (from 139.12 thousand people in September 2024 to 125.69 thousand people in September 2024), while during the same period the number of poor people in rural areas fell by 16.87 thousand people (from 206.62 thousand people in March 2024 to 189.75 thousand people in September 2024).
The role of food commodities in the Poverty Line is much greater than the role of non-food commodities. The contribution of the food poverty line to the poverty line in September 2024 was recorded at 75.92 percent.
The three types of food commodities that have the greatest influence on the value of the Poverty Line are rice, filter clove cigarettes, red chili (in urban and rural areas). Meanwhile, the five most dominant non-food commodities are housing costs, gasoline, electricity, education, and toiletries.
